Starbound, at first, wasn’t my ideal game, but once it was gifted to me, I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” My playthrough of this game was pretty interesting, as I don’t care for 2D platform games much. I play Minecraft a lot, so getting into it was okay, but I ran into issues as how I should go about getting new equipment and starting to make a home. On a positive note, the idea of traveling to many planets makes this game very interesting, as it’s more sci-fi, and I believe Terraria is more mystical. As I only made a base and really only scratched the surface of the first world that I am on. There is no way to say how deep down the rabbit hole I would go, as this game seems very endless.

Multiplayer is possible, but don’t think it’s going to be a plug and play. You will need to know some networking and be computer-able to handle both the game and such. If you’re on a private network, it’s not as hard, but I think that without some understanding of how networking works, you’ll definitely run into some frustration in the process. Hamachi is the best for VPN, but being limited to 5 computers, you’ll have to link many networks together to get a good sized server. But all that work seems wasted because by then you could have set up a server on a dedicated server and such.

Though I didn’t do a review for mods, they are available for this game even though it’s in early access. Many of them are pretty neat. There is a Chocobo mod, which as a fan of Final Fantasy, makes me moogle any day. Overall, my first impression of this game leads me to give it a 3.5 out of 5 so far, but I guess it’s about a 4.6 out of 5 if I really went into the game more and experienced more of what it has to offer. Once the game is fully released and given more details, I will give you a full review.

Drakeal Score:

Graphics: 4/5
Very good pixel art and environment is there. Needs some polishing when its fully released.

Storyline: 2/5
I really did (didn’t?) see much lore in the beginning, the sum of it being where you leave your home planet. Not much more than that.

Combat: 2/5
It’s annoying how they have it, but its my first impression. It could be better.

Gameplay: 4/5
Overall, it has a “good game” feel to it and such. I thought I would hate it, but I find it to be a good game to pass the time and I enjoy it, too.

Overall: 3.5/5
